Bye Bye Year 2004

Best Of Sports

Major Rathod-

Major Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore’s crack shot in the double trap won India the Olympic silver, ending an agonizing wait of 104 years for the prized medal. For the otherwise dispirited Indian contingent Rathore provided the much-needed shot in the arm. It was a great moment in India’s sporting history when he draped the Indian tricolour across his shoulders during the medal ceremony.

Double Whammy: Dhaka Test-

The recently concluded first Test against Bangladesh in Dec 2004 would be remembered for the two major records it witnessed. Leg spinner Kumble joined Kapil Dev at 434 wickets and then surpassed him to become India’s highest wicket taker in test cricket. If that was not good enough Sachin Tendulkar cracked a career-best 248 [not out] to equal Sunil Gavaskar's world record 34 test centuries.

Brian Lara'400-

Sometimes history really repeats itself. Ten years after scoring 375 Lara became the 1st person to make 400 runs against England in Antigua on 12th April’04.

Dravid: ICC Cricketer Of The Year-

Googlies, Yorkers, brickbats, come what they may bounce off his unflinching mien that always keeps its cool. Rahul Dravid, the willow world’s newest pin-up boy, indisputably proves that good guys finish first. Rahul Dravid – ICC Cricketer of the Year.

Greece: Winner Euro-2004-

Charisteas headed unfancied Greeks into wonderland, resulting in one of the most improbable of victories.

Anju Bobby George Wins Gold-

Anju leapt to Gold in Japan by logging in 6.61m to upstage Athen’s Olympics champion
